Learn Ladino Judeo-Spanish

How to learn Ladino without letting modern Spanish overwrite it

If you already speak Spanish, that is both a gift and a trap. Ladino is close enough that Spanish will happily replace every word that made it Judeo-Spanish.

Learn Ladino Judeo-Spanish app on iPhone

People search “learn Ladino” after a funeral, a cookbook, a synagogue class, or a grandmother’s saying they can no longer unpack. Judeo-Spanish is a living conversation language of Sephardi families — Istanbul, Salonika, Sarajevo, Morocco’s Haketia communities, and the diaspora in the Americas. It is not a museum label for “medieval Spanish”.

A good beginner path is social, not grammatical: how you host, how you talk to family, how you buy something, how you write a letter, how you sit at a community table. Then you look at the places modern Spanish would steal the line — and you keep the Ladino choice on purpose.

What to watch for

The iPhone conversation table

Learn Ladino Judeo-Spanish is not a Spanish clone and not an archive dump. A purchase is required. There is no free lesson tier and no free trial. After Monthly Conversation or Lifetime Unlock you can study pedagogical scenes for hosting, family, market talk, letters and gatherings; use Echo Across Ports to compare labelled regional realizations with caveats; open Spanish Lens cards; and read Sources & Ethics notes.

Monthly Conversation auto-renews unless you cancel in Apple ID settings. Lifetime Unlock is a one-time purchase. Scenes are learning drafts. Take them to an elder when you can.

Heritage learners of Western Armenian and Assyrian Aramaic are in a similar fight to keep a living variety distinct. Those posts: Western Armenian, Assyrian Aramaic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ladino just old Spanish?

No. Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) grew in Sephardi communities after 1492 and picked up Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, French and other layers. A modern Spanish course will overwrite living Ladino choices.

What is Haketia?

Haketia is a related North African Judeo-Spanish variety. It should never be unlabelled as generic Ladino. The app’s ethics notes flag that.

Are the scenes a community corpus?

The App Store listing says scenes are learning drafts, not a speaker-validated community corpus. Treat them as pedagogy, then check phrases with elders.
